I don't know. I've read about how a car gets determined it's a totaled car and all, but the whole deal is still magic fuckery to me.

The insurance coverage the owner had might have been pretty minimal, in which case, even not a lot of damage can "total" a car and give it a salvage title.

Even if that was the case though, you'd think the owner would then just pay to have the damage fixed. I mean, if he can afford a bimmer, he can most likely afford the repair. But you never know what people's circumstances in life are.

The thing to check would be any frame damage, but I know nothing about BMW's and am going to assume they're more of a unibody structure anyways.

I'm guessing there might be stuff like subframe damage or broken/bent suspension that we can't see.

Maybe it wa a theft that was recovered damaged as we see it now after the insurance company had already paid the owner. The insurance company probably now has to sell it and is using the salvor. Just a thought.
